West Sussex – Live-In Housekeeper – Seaside Property – £50,000–£52,000 Gross Per Annum

Family Description and Location

A private household on the West Sussex coast, situated between Worthing and Arundel, is looking for an experienced and highly professional Live-In Housekeeper to take responsibility for the day-to-day care and presentation of a beautiful family home.

The property has good transport links, with a direct train service to Clapham Junction taking approximately 1 hour 30 minutes.

The principals are frequently at home and work from home, and they enjoy entertaining family and friends.

The household includes an adult Shih Tzu and a new Pug puppy, so the successful candidate must genuinely enjoy dogs and be happy for their care to form part of the working day.

There is also a second property immediately nearby which is used for holiday lets and cleaned by an external agency. When time permits, the Housekeeper may occasionally assist with laundry, bed preparation and presentation at this property.

Job Description

The Housekeeper will be responsible for maintaining the home to an excellent standard and should be organised, proactive and confident working independently.

Duties will include:

• General housekeeping and cleaning throughout the property
• Daily care and presentation of bedrooms, bathrooms and principal living areas
• Making beds and preparing guest bedrooms
• Laundry and excellent ironing
• Care of delicate and natural fabrics including cashmere, wool, silk and linen
• Managing linen cupboards and household laundry
• Appropriate care of wood, marble, stone, glass and other high-quality finishes
• Maintaining a sensible deep-cleaning and rotational housekeeping programme
• Keeping cupboards, storage areas and household supplies organised
• Preparing the house for family and guests
• Table setting and assisting with informal service when entertaining
• Clearing and restoring dining and kitchen areas following meals
• Keeping the kitchen clean and organised
• Light food preparation such as washing and chopping vegetables, preparing salads, sandwiches and simple accompaniments
• Receiving deliveries and liaising with contractors and tradespeople when required
• Shopping and general household errands
• Assisting with packing and household preparation when the principals travel
• General care of the Shih Tzu and Pug puppy, including feeding, garden/toilet trips, walking when required and keeping their areas clean
• Occasional assistance with laundry and bed preparation at the nearby second property when the main household workload allows

The position requires someone who notices what needs doing and takes pride in ensuring the house always feels beautifully looked after.

Candidate Requirements

The successful candidate should have:

• A minimum of 3–5 years’ experience working within private households
• Excellent verifiable references
• Strong housekeeping, laundry and ironing skills
• Experience caring for high-quality furnishings, finishes and delicate clothing
• A proactive and organised approach to their work
• The ability to manage their own workload without constant supervision
• A genuine love of dogs and confidence caring for a young puppy
• Good spoken English and the ability to follow written care instructions
• A smart and professional presentation
• A warm, discreet, trustworthy and flexible manner
• Confidence working around principals who are frequently at home
• Flexibility when family and guests are in residence
• A full UK driving licence is preferable but not essential

Days of Work, Accommodation and Salary

• Full-time permanent position
• 50-hour working week
• Five days per week, including weekends
• Two consecutive weekdays off each week
• Some flexibility will be required when the principals are entertaining or have guests staying
• Working hours may occasionally be adjusted by prior arrangement
• Salary: £50,000–£52,000 gross per annum, depending on experience
• A separate self-contained one-bedroom apartment, located away from the main house, is currently being completed and is expected to be ready by spring
• Until the apartment is completed, the Housekeeper will have their own private bedroom and bathroom within the main house
