What is a Butler? What does a Butler do?
The role of a Butler has changed over the years as the requirements of modern households have evolved over time. The traditional ‘Downton Abbey’ Butler in formal households does still exist where the role is desired. A Butler’s duties could also include what was often referred to as a Gentleman’s Gentleman or a Valet but these terms are now a little antiquated.
The duties of a modern day Butler could include:
- Formal table service
- Serving drinks
- Valeting,
- Greeting guests
- Wine cellar management
- Cleaning silver
- Care of fine antiques and art
More and more, people are now looking for multi-talented individuals who are capable of a diverse role. The modern day Butler may act as a House Manager in a home and also be required to act as chauffeur, Personal Assistant, cook, and events organiser, and in the country may also be expected to to organise shoot lunches. Travelling with the Principal may also be involved.
A Butler would usually live in and be given private accommodation such as a cottage or flat.
