What is a House Manager?
A House Manager is someone who may look after one or more residences for their Principals. House Managers are usually employed in a household with several staff who need supervision and guidance. A House Manager may only be looking after one house, or a city & country residence, or they could be looking after several properties around the world and acting as a chief of staff. In some cases, their role will also involve being ‘hands on’ themselves, or they may carry out a purely supervisory role.
The House Manager would need to:
- Know how to receive guests
- Control the household budgets and inventory of supplies
- Oversee and deal with contractors and suppliers
- Arrange security
- Organise events and parties.
- Undertake the opening and closing of residences before and after the principal arrives.
- Shopping, arranging theatre tickets, restaurant reservations,
- Arrange the school run
Good House Managers can step into the shoes of anyone in the household should the occasion arise. A House Manager could live in or out, depending on the location and is, more often than not, the most senior member of staff in a household.
